Our author has demonstrated confidence in the recipients of this letter as we read in Hebrews 10:3, “But we are not among those who shrink back and thus perish, but are among those who have faith and preserve their souls.”
Before moving into chapter eleven which is all about faith, I want to spend one last day wrapping up our writer’s thought from chapter ten. Note that according to verse 39, the result of shrinking back is perishing. To perish is to experience the loss of all that gives worth to existence. It also conveys the loss of usefulness to God. How sad and tragic that even Christ’s followers, by shrinking back, can put themselves on the spiritual shelf so to speak. When God looks around at His people to choose someone for a privileged assignment, He certainly does not choose the faithless but the faithful. “Now what is sought in stewards is that one be found faithful (1 Corinthians 4:2). If God were to evaluate our spiritual life right now would He discover that we are faithful or shrinking back? We miss out on so much in this life and the eternity laid out before us when we choose not to live by faith.
Faith is such an ever-present part of our life and the strength of our faith can fluctuate continually. We can live by faith one moment and not the next. We can exhibit faith one day and not the next. This is why it is so imperative for us as Christians to renew our faith in God constantly. In a sense, it is like breathing. We take in breath from God that builds and strengthens our faith and then we exhale that breath and express the faith that we took in.
The result our author describes that comes from a living faith is the preservation of our souls. What in the world does that mean? Well, let’s first talk about the soul. Our soul is our God-given uniqueness that distinguishes us from everyone else. It is who God made us to be and what plan or purpose He predesigned us for. So, when we live by faith and trust the Lord our life unfolds before as God designed and desired it to play out. When we live in unbelief the person God meant us to be and what He created us for is never realized fully. God certainly does not lose out in any way because He has in His infinite wisdom factored in free will and unbelief into His overall plan. The ones who lose out are those who due to a lack of faith miss out on all that God would have desired for them in this life and the eternity that is fast approaching. So many people speak of finding themselves. Well according to God’s Word, the only way to truly find ourselves is by living in faith every day. When we choose faith each and everyday not only will we discover all that God created us to be, there will also be an inexpressible fulfillment and satisfaction we gain personally because we are doing life as God designed for us. There is no better life that we could ever experience that the life God has planned for us. So, let’s not miss out on all that God has for us. Choose faith today and preserve your soul. We were not created randomly or haphazardly. We were all created with a plan or purpose to fulfill in this life and throughout eternity. Find yourself. Choose faith.
